Street Bites turns one: a year of street food at Castlepoint, Bournemouth

A year ago, a stainless steel food truck opened its hatch on the upper level at Castlepoint Shopping Park for the first time. Twelve months, a great many burgers and a fair amount of low-and-slow brisket later, Street Bites is one year old.

The birthday offer

Order any main and a hot brownie pot comes with it, free. There is no code to remember and no voucher to show — it applies to every main on the menu, whether you order at the hatch or online for collection.

What counts as a main? Any burger, any hot dog, and anything from the Grill. So The Classic, The Dirty Bird, The Hogfather and the Street Bites Burger; The Dirty Dog, El Fuego Dog and Notorious P.I.G; Black Bark Brisket, Burnt Ends, St. Louis Ribs, the Hog Heaven Box and the Infamous Mixed Grill Box. Our meat-free mains count too — the Greenlight Burger and The Cowboy Wrap.

One brownie per main, while stocks last. When they are gone on Sunday, they are gone.

Jessica Brunyee, and a truck that started as a drawing

Street Bites is Jessica Brunyee's. The idea began, as a lot of good ones do, with something she could not afford: an American Airstream. Beautiful, iconic, and priced well beyond what a new street food business could justify.

So rather than give up on the look, she went at it from the other direction — going direct to a manufacturer in China with her own drawings and having the truck built to her specification for a fraction of the Airstream price. What arrived was a hand-finished stainless steel trailer built around how she actually wanted to cook, rather than a compromise around someone else's floor plan.

That decision is the reason Street Bites looks the way it does on the upper level at Castlepoint. The whole build, from blueprint to first service, is documented in Our Story.

What Bournemouth has ordered most

A year of orders is a fairly honest verdict on a menu. The dishes that have moved fastest:

• The Classic — beef burger with cheese, £12 · halal

• The Dirty Dog — cheese and crispy onions, £12
• Black Bark Brisket — £15 · halal
• Chicken Tenders — £6 · halal
• The Infamous Mixed Grill Box — £30, and still the one people photograph

A fair few of those carry a green HALAL mark, which was deliberate from the start — good halal street food in Bournemouth was harder to find than it should have been. What year two looks like

A few things have landed recently that are worth knowing about if you have not ordered in a while:

• Cash on collection — you no longer have to pay by card to order ahead. Pick Cash on Collection at checkout and pay at the truck.
